Installation Instructions

IMPORTANT: Check the voltage selector switch on the side before switching on for the first time. For the European power grid, it must be set to 230 V.
The power supply is designed for installation in dry indoor areas, control cabinets, or enclosures and is mounted with screws on a solid, level surface. Ensure adequate ventilation and keep the ventilation openings unobstructed, as power supplies generate heat during operation.
The connected devices must be suitable for 5 V DC. Plan for approximately 20% power reserve and use appropriately sized cables for high currents. For 5 V LED strips, you should re-inject power approximately every 2 to 3 meters.
Connection and commissioning must only be carried out by a qualified electrician.

At a glance:

• Connection and commissioning exclusively by a qualified electrician.
• Set the voltage selector switch to 230 V before switching on.
• Protection rating IP20: for dry indoor areas only; do not expose to moisture.
• Ensure adequate ventilation; do not cover the power supply.
• Always connect the protective conductor (FG/PE).
• Observe the maximum load of 300 W or 60 A, respectively; plan for a power reserve.
• Only readjust the output voltage using a measuring device and the potentiometer.

What is an LED power supply?

An LED power supply (also known as an LED transformer or LED power source) converts the standard mains voltage of 230V into the direct current (usually 12V or 24V) required for LED strips. It is an essential component of any LED installation and must be selected to match the power and voltage of the LEDs.

What voltages are common for LED power supplies?

Common output voltages are:

5V: typical for addressable LED strips such as WS2812 or SK6812

12V: common for shorter distances and standard LED strips

24V: ideal for longer LED strips or applications with lower voltage drop

48V: designed for particularly long distances

How do I calculate the right power for my power supply?

The required power is determined by the total power of all connected LED strips in watts. You should also include a safety margin of approx. 10%.

Example:
An LED strip with 10 W/m, length 5m → 50W + 10% margin = at least 55W power supply capacity.

What types of LED power supplies are there?

  • Open power supplies (industrial form): for installation in enclosures with ventilation slots
  • Enclosed power supplies: protected, usually IP20 or higher.
Variants with IP65 or IP67 even offer the option of installation in damp and outdoor areas
  • Plug-in power supplies: ideal for smaller LED projects, plug-and-play
  • DIN rail power supplies: for distribution in control cabinets

What does the IP protection rating mean for power supplies?

The IP protection rating indicates how well a power supply is protected against dust and moisture:

  • IP20: for dry indoor areas only
  • IP65 / IP67: for damp areas, outdoor use, or dusty environments

Can multiple LED strips be connected to one power supply?

Yes, as long as the total power of all strips does not overload the power supply and they are voltage-compatible.

Pay attention to:

  • sufficient cable cross-section
  • secure connections
  • additional feed points for longer distances

What happens if the power supply is too weak?

A power supply that is too weak can lead to flickering, color distortion, or even damage. The LEDs will no longer receive sufficient power – reliable operation cannot be guaranteed.

Can I use a power supply with too much power?

Yes, that is easily possible. LED strips only draw as much power as they need.

  • Advantage: more headroom, longer power supply lifespan
  • Disadvantage: excessive oversizing reduces efficiency and unnecessarily increases standby power consumption

How is an LED power supply connected?

  • Primary side (230V AC): L (Phase), N (Neutral conductor), PE (Protective earth, if present)
  • Secondary side (e.g. 12V DC): V+ and V–

⚠️ Important note: Connection to the 230V mains voltage must be carried out exclusively by a qualified electrician. Improper connection can lead to electric shocks, short circuits or fires.

Can I connect a power supply myself?

  • 230V connection: must only be carried out by a qualified electrician.
  • 12/24V side (low voltage): can generally also be connected by laypeople.
⚠️ Important note: Many power supplies have common terminal blocks where both the 230V input and the 12/24V outputs are located next to each other. For this reason, the wiring of such power supplies should always be carried out by a qualified electrician.

What is the difference between 12V and 24V power supplies?

  • 12V: Standard for many LED strips, suitable for shorter distances
  • 24V: Lower voltage drop, therefore better for longer distances
