Typical applications for LED controllers
LED controllers are used in virtually all areas of LED lighting:
- LED strips (single-color, CCT, RGB, RGBW, RGBCCT, addressable)
- LED panels and area lights
- LED spotlights and recessed lights
- Furniture and kitchen lighting
- Indirect ceiling lighting (e.g., light coves)
- Commercial applications (shopfitting, display areas)
- Industrial and machine lighting (e.g., status indicators or lighting control)
What types of LED controllers are there?
Basically, we distinguish between two systems:
LED controllers for analog LEDs (conventional control)
These controllers control the entire lighting unit simultaneously.
Typical features:
- uniform brightness or color control
- easy installation
- high reliability
Suitable for:
- single-color LED strips
- CCT (color temperature control)
- RGB / RGBW / RGBCCT
Ideal for conventional lighting without chasing effects.
LED controllers for addressable LEDs (digital control)
Addressable controllers enable individual control of single LEDs or segments.
Typical features:
- dynamic effects and animations
- pixel-precise control
- high flexibility
Modern controllers often support a wide range of LED chips (ICs) and can be used in a variety of ways.
Software such as WLED is often used, which additionally offers features such as:
- app and web control
- extensive effects
- 2D mapping for LED panels and area installations
.
Buying guide: What to look out for
For your setup to work optimally, the following points are crucial:
Suitable LED type
The controller must match the LED lighting being used:
- Single-color / CCT / RGB / RGBW / RGBCCT → analog controller
- Addressable LED strips (e.g., WS2812B, WS2815, SK6812) → digital controller
Voltage (e.g., 5V, 12V, 24V, 48V)
Important: LED controllers do not perform voltage conversion.
- The input voltage is passed through
- Controllers operate within a defined voltage range
The power supply, controller, and LED must always be compatible.
Control method
Depending on the system, various control options are available:
- Wireless remote control
- Wall switch / rotary dimmer
- App or web control (e.g., WLED)
- Wired control (e.g., 0–10V)
- DALI
Many modern controllers combine several control methods.
Power & load capacity
Important:
- observe the maximum wattage or take the total current into account
- check the load capacity per channel
